Education
Born in 1967 and raised in the south east of England, Richard received his BA(Hons) degree in Architecture from Thames Polytechnic (1989), and his Post-Graduate Diploma in Architecture from the Kent Institute of Art and Design (1992).
Work
Art and architecture are historically linked disciplines, however the creative processes and outcomes are very different. Architecture needs external input from many sources, and generally manifests itself in the material world as a functional design/building.
Art is a personal exploration of the world, through ideas, philosophy and experience, and this too will manifest itself in the material world, but in a more symbolic format. It is then for the viewer of the art to make the connections and decipher its meaning.
I work within an abstract non-figurative art form. I’m not trying to abstract the retinal world. Shapes, colours and forms enter into the painting process, which I react to, as the piece develops. It has an initial random aspect, and this is then developed by the artists own sensibilities. Abstract art has a fluid quality that does not need to conform or adhere to any thoughts, other than the moment.
